EPC model as reference process

Note the following when using an EPC model as a reference process.

  • Supported models:

    EPC, EPC (column display), EPC (row display), EPC (table display), EPC (horizontal table display), and EPC (material flow)

    It also applies to sub models with at least one function.

  • The reference process to be transferred must have exactly one starting point. Process starting points can be events or functions.

    If more than one starting point exist in the EPC model, the starting point for the reference process must be specified.

  • The EPC start model can have assigned (subordinate) models of EPC type. An assigned model can be selected if at least the following restrictions are met:

    If a function in a model has an assigned (subordinate) model, the function can be replaced by the assigned model, if the function is enclosed by one incoming and one outgoing event and the assigned model contains these enclosing events as start and end events.

    If an end event in a model has occurrences as start events in other models, the end event can be replaced with the start event. In this case, the model with the end event is extended by the model with the start event.

  • Only functions, connections, and connectors (AND, OR and XOR) are transferred to ARIS Process Mining.

  • Self-loops and cycles are not allowed.

  • If the same functions with assignments or end events have multiple occurrences in the same model, the occurrences are selectable.

  • If several models are available for replacement, one of these models must be specified.

BPMN model as reference process

Note the following when using a BPMN model as a reference process.

  • For a better auditability and understanding of the logic used for the conformance check, the BPMN model is transformed into a reduced transfer process. This transfer process contains only object types and connections that are relevant for the conformance check. The transfer process is available for you to review the logic that was sent to ARIS Process Mining. The transferred process is stored separately and has no effect on the original BPMN model.

  • Note that if you want to use the BPMN reference process to perform a conformance check, the BPMN process must follow certain modeling conventions that are supported by ARIS Process Mining. If the reference process does not conform to these conventions, an error log model is created. The invalid reference process is not transferred to ARIS Process Mining. You can open the error log model to view the error description. You can then adjust the original BPMN model.

  • Reference processes that are used only for process overlays do not have any syntactic restrictions.

  • If the BPMN model contains more than one pool, you can select a pool to be transferred. The transfer model must contain content from only one pool.

  • If a pool includes call activities or sub-processes (embedded or connected), you can select the relevant elements to be transferred. This means that you select a pool, the elements it contains, such as embedded call activities or sub-processes, and determine the hierarchical model level whose elements are to be transferred
